Articles

In the written part of the LCCI 2 exam you may be asked to write an article in Question 1 or in Question 3. Below you will find a sample article and a set of suggestions on how to tackle this kind of task properly.

Scenario:             You work for Rosalinda's Hotels Ltd., 98 Hill Street, Bath BU22 2XL, which is the Head Office of the Rosalinda's Hotels' Organisation. It has 50 hotels indifferent parts of the UK.

You are informed by Jane Erie that she has been asked to write an article for a booklet about careers in the hotel industry. She asks you to write a draft of the article for her to read and points out that it should be persuasive in tone. She asks you to indicate the attractions of the hotel industry, such as meeting a variety of people, how it can be a worthwhile career for ambitious people (she herself started as a telephonist in a hotel), tips that can be given by grateful guests, good staff accommodation and food. She requests you to add anything else that you think is relevant.

Sample article:

People often ask what the hotel industry has to offer. The answer is simple - lots!

Below you will find some useful hints on how to tackle this kind of task successfully:

1               Read the question and work out exactly what you are required to do. The instruction at the bottom of the question normally reads "Write the article".

2               In the case of the article there are no layout requirements as in the other types of questions we have dealt with. An article, however, should have an arresting opening and should round everything off in the last paragraph. Additionally, provide a title if asked for.

3               The purpose of an article is to give some information in the reader and at the same time arise interest in him. So, bearing in mind the person who this article is aimed at, read the question and decide what information is important to the reader in order to complete the task. You are often asked to invent information. Again decide what information is useful and important to the reader and make it up accordingly.

4               It is worth remembering that the first paragraph should make the reader want to read on, it should attract the reader’s attention. Secondly all the points you want to make should follow in a logical order. And finally they should be drawn together or concluded in the final paragraph as its aim is to round off the article by giving the reader something to think about.

5               Articles are usually written to go into a magazine (e.g. company magazine or newsletter). They should be narrative and informative. Be careful for extra instructions e.g. questions which say "Your article should be interesting and persuasive" or "add anything else you think is relevant."

6               Finally, remember about checking your work. It might be useful to ask yourself the following questions

a.      Have you completed the task?

b.      Have you included all relevant information?

c.      Have you left out all irrelevant information?

d.      Have you ordered information in the best way?

e.      Is the language appropriate for an article?

f.        Is the article “catchy”?

g.      Have you checked spelling, grammar, punctuation and paragraphing?
